Erato 13-15 AD (Kov 187-188)

Description

Erato (BNP [2]) was the last of the Orontid line to rule Armenia in antiquity. Little is known about her short second reign. Erato's coinage is known from two denominations, eight and four chalkoi, the larger of which depicts the city gate and walls of Artaxata, an unprecedented type in the Armenian series. It is interesting that even as sole ruler Erato does not wear the tiara but depicts it separately on the reverse of her tetrachalkon. Both denominations bear the date "year 3," but it is not clear whether this takes into account the years of her first reign. Thus, we cannot conclude that her second reign lasted for three years or even one full year based on the numismatic evidence.
