Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869-1923) is a great Armenian writer and poet, a public figure.
He attended a school in his home village of Dsegh (Lori region, Armenia). Then he moved to Tiflis (Tbilisi, Georgia) to receive further education at the Nersisian School. He worked for a variety of Armenian newspapers and magazines. In 1912-1921, he presided over the Caucasian Society of Armenian Writers.
In 1899, Tumanyan on his own initiative created the “Vernatun”, a literary group, which brought together many prominent Armenian writers and poets.
Tumanyan’s literary heritage is diverse in genres. He got reputation as a poet since the 1890s after a two-volume of the “Poems” was published. The creative principles of his writing were most prominently observed in poems (“Maro”, “Sako of Lori”, “Anush”, David of Sassoun”), ballads and fairy-tales (“Akhtamar”, “The Siege of Tmkaberd”, “A Drop of Honey”, “The Lord and the Servant”, “Brave Nazar”), short stories and quatrains (“Gikor”, “My Friend Neso”), putting people’s thoughts and oral traditions at the bottom line.
Tumanyan is an author of many articles on scientific literature.
During World War I, Tumanyan worked hard to help immigrants from Western Armenia, especially the orphans.
Tumanyan’s works have been translated to different languages ​​of the world. They have been widely presented in the genres of music, cinema and painting.
