Reference Description

Vartan Mahokian (1869-1937), a world-famous Armenian master of marine art, was born in Trabzon (Western Armenia). He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and then continued studying at Hovhannes Aivazovsky’s studio. In 1904 he became a member of the Artists Union of Berlin. He worked in Trabzon, Berlin, London, and settled in Nice, France, after First World War.
Mahokian painted many seascapes and landscapes (“The Monastery in Trabzon”, “Wrath of the Sea at Twilight”, “A Wave”), which stand out by delicate tones of color and a deep sense of reality.
Mahokian’s paintings have been displayed at many exhibitions in Cairo, Alexandria, Munich, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Nice, London, Marseille, Paris. The artist’s works embellish the National Gallery of Armenia, the museum of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Nice Fine Arts Museum, the Chiurlionis National Art Museum of Kaunas, the museum of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Venice and private collections. In France in 1925 Vartan Mahokian was awarded the Legion of Honor.
