Reference Description

Konstantinos Monasteriotes, sebastos, 13th century
Seal (Lead, 41 mm, 55.21 g, 12 h)
Obv. Saint George, nimbate, standing facing, holding spear in his right hand and resting his left hand on shield.
Rev. Inscription in six lines, cross above.

Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus 1376 (quoting a single seal in Thessaloniki). A heavy and impressive late Byzantine seal. Minor roughness and scratches, otherwise, very fine.

According to Wassiliou-Seibt, the family name Monasteriotes likely derives from the toponym Monasterion, present day Bitola, in North Macedonia. An alternative explanation is that the name is Armenian, referring to Vanetsi, a town near lake Van, which has the same meaning as the Greek Monasteriotes, 'coming from the monastery'.

Notes

After reevaluating the information, it seems that there isn't a direct connection between the names Monasteriotes and Vanetsi. Monasteriotes has a clear Greek origin, while Vanetsi is of Armenian origin. Both names have meanings related to monasteries, but the connection between the two names is limited to their meanings rather than their linguistic origins.

Monasteriotes (Μοναστηριώτης) has a Greek origin and is derived from the Greek word monasterion (μοναστήριον), meaning "monastery." It suggests that the person or family comes from a place with a monastery or has a strong connection to monastic life.

Vanetsi (Վանեցի) is an Armenian name, originating from the historical Armenian city of Van (Վան), which was known for its many monasteries. Vanetsi could mean "from Van" or "associated with the monasteries of Van."

Although both names have meanings related to monasteries, it is essential to acknowledge that they stem from different linguistic origins and do not have a direct connection to each other. It's important to consider the historical context and the cultural backgrounds of each name separately.
