Galata - St. George Church

The St. George Church of Galata, also known as the Church of St. George the Trophy-bearer, is a historic Greek Orthodox Church located in the Galata district of Istanbul, Turkey. The church dates back to the Byzantine period and has undergone numerous renovations and modifications over the centuries.

The church has a unique architectural style, featuring a cross-shaped floor plan with a central dome and four smaller domes surrounding it. The exterior of the church is decorated with intricate stone carvings and frescoes. The church also contains many valuable religious artifacts, including a wooden iconostasis and numerous icons of saints.

Throughout its history, the St. George Church of Galata has served as an important center of worship for the local Greek Orthodox community. It has also played a significant role in the cultural and political history of Istanbul, serving as a venue for important religious and social events.

During the Ottoman period, the St. George Church of Galata was converted into a mosque and underwent extensive modifications. However, in the early 20th century, it was restored and returned to its original purpose as a Greek Orthodox Church.
