Izmit (Nicomedia) - St. George or Surb Kevork Church

Church or Organization Info

The St. George or Surb Kevork Armenian Church is a historic Armenian church located in the city of Izmit in Turkey. It was built in the 18th century by the local Armenian community during the Ottoman era. The church is notable for its unique architecture, which includes elements of both Armenian and Ottoman design.

One of the most distinctive features of the church is its bell tower, which is built separately from the main church structure. The tower is adorned with intricate stone carvings and serves as a testament to the skill of the craftsmen who built it.

The church has undergone several restorations over the years to preserve its historic significance. In 2007, the Turkish government provided funds for the restoration of the church's roof, and in 2018, a major renovation project was undertaken to repair the church's walls and frescoes.
