This silver commemorate coin, issued by the Central Bank of Armenia, is dedicated to the 150-th anniversary of Leo’s birth.
Leo (Araqel Babakhanyan, 14.03.1860, Shoushi – 14.11.1932, Yerevan) is an outstanding Armenian historian, publicist, writer and literary critic. In 1895-1906 he worked as a permanent contributor and secretary of the “Mshak” newspaper (Tiflis). In 1924 he was invited to Yerevan, where till the end of his life he taught different subjects on Armenology in the Yerevan University and contributed to the Armenian press. In 1925 Leo was elected an Academician of the ASSR Institute of Sciences. He published a hundred of critical articles, essays, research and literary works. Leo’s “Armenian History” three-volume edition is of a particular value since he expounded there the history of Armenian people from the ancient times up to the end of the 18-th century.
