This 10.000 dram-denominated gold coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to Komitas.
Komitas (Soghomon Soghomonyan, 1869-1935) is the brightest devotee to Armenian musical culture, a founder of national classical composer school. As a Vardapet (archimandrite), he created a choir and performed concerts in many countries. He was one of the pioneers to launch thorough studies of khaz (musical notes). As a member of international music society, Komitas successfully introduced Armenian folk and clerical songs in a number of European cultural centers. The music of Komitas had a noticeable input on the development of music of the East and largely contributed to overall recognition and expansion of the Armenian popular song.
