This 10000 dram denominated gold coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to the centenary of William Saroyan’s birth.
William Saroyan was born in Fresno, USA, in the family of immigrants from Bitlis, West Armenia. Self-education, reading of American and world literature and inheritance and mastering of culture and traditions of his homeland greatly contributed to the formation of Saroyan as a writer.
Saroyan is considered as a master of short stories and has brought in this genre fresh social-psychological themes and vital humane moral motifs. Conceptions of internal freedom and spiritual beauty of a person, love and kindness are personified in Saroyan’s novels and dramas.
The obverse of the coin bears the words “My heart’s in the highlands” – a title of Saroyan’s well-known play.
