Reference Description

This gold coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to the bicentenary of Khachatour Abovyan’s birth.
Khachatour Abovyan (15.10.1809 - 02.04.1948) is the founder of Armenian new literature and pedagogics. He was born in the village of Kanaker (now in Yerevan perimeter) and got his education in the Dorpat University (now Tartu, Estonia) being trained for taking up teaching by a special program. As an educationalist he raised the question of people’s literacy and believed that propagation of beautiful arts and enlightenment was the way through which humans should achieve moral perfection. He studied the issue of origination and development of the Armenian language and worked extensively to adjust the New Armenian language to the modern requirements. He well realized and admitted the social role and significance of the language as a factor critical for the survival of the nation.
Khachatour Abovyan’s creative activity has left a deep track in the history of Armenian literature and public thought. His works have been translated into several languages.
The obverse of the coin depicts an arch with the words by Khachatour Abovyan calling Armenian people to devotion to their motherland, and his signature.
The reverse depicts the portrait of Khachatour Abovyan.
The coin is designed by Karapet Abrahamyan, a member of Armenian Association of Artists.
It is produced in the Mint of Finland LTD.
