Reference Description

The Central Bank of Armenia has issued the gold coin commemorating the 800-th anniversary of Toros Roslin’s birth.
Toros Roslin is a miniaturist and scribe of the second half of the 13-th century, one of the outstanding representatives of the Cilician School of Miniature. He worked in Cilicia, in the scribe house at the Hromkla Castle, and also in Sis.
The seven luxuriously illustrated books bearing Toros Roslin’s signature have been preserved, two of which, “The Gospel of Zeitoun” (1256) and “The Gospel of Malatya” (1268), are kept in Matenadaran - the Yerevan depository of manuscripts named after Mashtots.
More than two hundred preserved pictures and elegant letter-patterns of Toros Roslin’s manuscripts have enriched the artistic inheritance of the 13-th century.
As a talented person, scribe, chronologist and incomparable miniaturist Toros Roslin has its own indispensable place in the history of medieval art among the best painters of the East and the West.
