On August 14, 2024, the Central Bank of Armenia released a commemorative silver coin to honor the 100th birth anniversary of Charles Aznavour, a monumental figure in the world of music and culture. Aznavour, a French-Armenian artist, left an indelible mark on the global stage with his contributions as a singer, songwriter, actor, and writer.
Born in Paris in 1924 to an Armenian immigrant family, Aznavour’s career spanned several decades, during which he became renowned for his deep, emotive voice and poignant lyrics. With over 1,000 songs to his name, including classics like “La Bohème” and “She,” and roles in more than 90 films, Aznavour’s influence transcended borders, earning him accolades and admiration worldwide. His commitment to Armenia, particularly after the 1988 Spitak earthquake, showcased his deep connection to his heritage, culminating in the founding of the Aznavour Foundation aimed at supporting educational, social, and cultural programs in Armenia.
The coin itself is a testament to Aznavour’s legacy. The obverse side of the coin showcases a detailed portrait of Aznavour, with the intertwined flags of Armenia and France, symbolizing his dual heritage and the bridges he built between the two cultures. On the reverse side, the coin features the Order of Motherland, an award bestowed upon Aznavour for his service to Armenia, set against the backdrop of the Armenian eternity symbol.
This limited-edition coin is minted in 925 silver, weighs 33.6 grams, and has a diameter of 40 mm. It’s a piece of numismatic art, designed by Haroutiun Samuelian and produced at the Mint of Poland, with only 1,000 pieces issued.
