In a grand display of national pride and cultural preservation, the Central Bank of Armenia has released three unique silver collector coins commemorating landmark anniversaries in Armenian history. The special-edition coins celebrate the centenaries of Armenian cinema and the birth of acclaimed artist Hagop Hagopian, as well as the golden double victory of the “Ararat-73” football team 50 years ago.
This coin pays homage to the establishment of Petkino (later renamed “Haykino” and “Hayfilm”), the institution that marked the inception of Armenian cinematography. It recognizes the country’s cinematographic achievements over the past century, featuring over 700 feature films and numerous international awards. The coin’s design encapsulates the rich history of Armenian cinema with stylized images of a film strip and a projector.
Honoring the 100th anniversary of Hagopian’s birth, this coin acknowledges the artist’s enormous influence on Armenian art. His transformative works, spanning from still lifes to thematic paintings and unique metallic sculptures, capture his perception of Armenia and universal themes. The coin’s design features a depiction of Hagopian’s painting, “Man and Plant,” alongside an image of the artist in his studio.
This coin celebrates the historic achievement of the “Ararat” football team of Yerevan in 1973, when they won both the USSR Cup and the title of the USSR Champion. This double win, marked as the “Armenian football boom,” is engraved in Armenian sports history. The coin’s design features the “Ararat” team emblem from 1973 and the USSR Cup and Medal.
