Karagumruk - St. John or Surb Hovhannes

Church or Organization Info

The Karagumruk St. John Church, also known as Surb Hovhannes Church, is a historic Armenian church located in the Karagumruk neighborhood of Istanbul, Turkey. It was built in the 18th century by the local Armenian community. The church features a traditional Armenian architectural style, with a cross-shaped layout and dome.

During the Armenian Genocide in 1915, the church was looted and many of its precious religious artifacts were stolen or destroyed. However, the building itself was not severely damaged and continued to serve as a place of worship for the remaining Armenian community in Istanbul. In the 1960s, the church was renovated and restored by the Istanbul Armenian Patriarchate.
