Tigranes IV 8-5 BC (Kov 175-176)
Description
Tigranes IV (BNP [5]) succeeded his father Tigranes III, but allied himself with Parthia instead of Rome. In response Augustus sent Gaius Caesar to replace Tigranes with his pro-Roman brother Artavasdes III. The tetrachalkon of Tigranes's first reign follows the Parthian custom of enclosing the reverse type with a square (in this case three- sided) legend. The standing horse (four chalkoi) and horse forepart (two chalkoi) are the only coins known for the first reign and were struck at Artaxata.
