Notes
Philaretos Brachamios was a prominent Armenian general serving the Byzantine Empire during the late 11th century. Following the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, which resulted in a significant loss of territory for the Byzantines, Philaretos emerged as a powerful military leader. He maintained control over strategic regions in Cilicia, Armenia, and Syria, functioning as a semi-autonomous ruler.
During this period, Philaretos held the titles of kouropalates and stratopedarches of the East, reflecting his authority over both the military and administrative aspects of the eastern provinces. His leadership was characterized by a series of successful military campaigns against the Seljuk Turks and the consolidation of Byzantine power in the region.
The seal, dating from circa 1070 to 1080, underscores Philaretos's significant role within the Byzantine military hierarchy. Despite minor weaknesses in the strike, the seal is otherwise in very fine condition. It is referenced by Seibt and Theodoridis, with slight variations in the legend that include the specification "of the East."
