This gold commemorative coin depicting Cancer has been issued by the Central Bank of Armenia under the International Program “The Signs of Zodiac”.
Cancer is the fourth sign of Zodiac, a northern constellation between Gemini and Leo. The sign of Cancer stems from one of the 12 Trials of Heracles. According to Greek mythology Hera sent a giant crab to distract Heracles while he was battling the Hydra. The crab was only a nuisance, and Heracles simply crashed the crab under his foot just before he defeated the Hydra. Hera honored the crab’s attempt at stopping her most hated of Zeus’s children by placing it amongst the stars.
The astrological period called Cancer takes the period from June 22 to July 22.
