Reference Description
The Yerevan University was founded in 1919 by the Republic of Armenia Council of Ministers’ relevant decision adopted on May 16th that year.
The solemn opening ceremony of the university was on January 31, 1920 in Alexandrapol (now Gyumri), and the start of classes was given by a lecture delivered by renowned Armenologist Stepan Malkhasyants.
In December of the same year, the university was reorganized into the Yerevan People’s University; in 1923 it was given a status of state university.
Famous Armenian scientists, H. Manandyan, M. Abeghyan, H. Acharyan, Leo, G. Ghapantsyan among others, have lectured at the Yerevan State University.
Thousands of students take their specialties attending Armenia’s main university. As well as a publisher of scientific journals, the Yerevan State University is home to fundamental and applied research in various fields of modern science.
Obverse: a fragment from the stela dedicated to Armenian scientists (erected in the hall of YSU, sculptor – Vahan Ghazaryan, architect – Levon Balayan, engineer – Sos Manukyan) and inscription “SCIENTIA POTENTIA EST”.
Reverse: a fragment from the sculptural group “Sahak Partev and Mesrop Mashtots” (situated in front of YSU, sculptor – Ara Sargsyan, architect – Romeo Julhakyan) against the background of the images of YSU building and the coat of arms.
Designed by Haroutiun Samuelian (obverse) and Vardan Vardanyan (reverse).
Minted in the Lithuanian mint.
