Year of Caucasian Leopard - 1,000 dram 2019
Identifier
Modern Silver Commemorative - 236
Reference Description
The Government of the Republic of Armenia declared 2019 the Year of Caucasian Leopard. Arrangements under this initiative are called to increase the public awareness of critically endangered animals and to enhance understanding of nature conservation and opportunities for ecotourism development.
The Caucasian Leopard (Panthera Pardus Ciscaucasica) is one of the most endangered species both in the world and in Armenia. At present, the Caucasian Leopard is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Armenia and in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
The area of leopard inhabitation in Armenia stretches from central and eastern parts of the Khosrov Forest State Reserve to the terrains covering the Geghama, Zangezur, Vayots Dzor, Bargushat and Meghri ridges.
Since 2002, Armenia has been implementing the Caucasian Leopard conservation program. In spring 2018, the photo-traps installed in the Khosrov Forest State Reserve for the first time recorded a Caucasian Leopard returning to its permanent location in the Reserve.
Obverse: the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia and a panorama of “Khosrov Forest” State Reserve.
Reverse: an image of the Caucasian Leopard against the background of “Khosrov Forest” State Reserve (the photo was taken by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets) and “Panthera Pardus Ciscaucasica” inscription.
Designed by Aram Urutyan.
Minted in the Royal Dutch Mint.
