Pharasmanes Apokapes, whose name reveals his Armenian descent, is attested in written sources as the commander ('strategos') of a garrison sent to guard the acropolis at Hierapolis. He was appointed by Romanos IV Diogenesand and delegated to ensure that the city could be settled by Romans and Armenians (Attaleiates, History 116.9-11 / 88.4-6; cf. PBW "Pharasmanes 101").
