Notes

Philaretos Brachamios was a significant Armenian general who served the Byzantine Empire during the tumultuous period following the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. As the empire struggled to maintain control over its eastern territories, Philaretos rose to prominence due to his military prowess and leadership abilities. He held crucial command over the eastern regiments, earning the titles of protokouropalates and domestikos of the scholai of the East.

During the late 11th century, Philaretos managed to secure and govern extensive areas in Cilicia, Armenia, and Syria, operating with a degree of autonomy while still acknowledging Byzantine authority. His role was crucial in defending Byzantine interests against the encroaching Seljuk Turks and other regional threats.

This seal, dating from circa 1070 to 1080, reflects Philaretos's high-ranking position and is a testament to his influence and authority within the Byzantine military hierarchy. Despite slight variations in legend as noted in references, the seal remains in very fine condition, offering valuable insight into Philaretos's military career and contributions to the Byzantine state.
