The Bakırköy Holy Virgin Mary church is a historical Greek Orthodox church located in Bakırköy, Istanbul, Turkey. The church was originally built in the 6th century as a monastery and was rebuilt in the 12th century as a church. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and became an important pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians.
The church has undergone several restorations and renovations over the centuries, with the most recent one being in 1906. The church features a cruciform plan with a dome and a narthex, and its walls are made of brick and stone. The interior is decorated with frescoes and icons, and the altar is adorned with a gold-plated iconostasis.
During the Byzantine period, the Bakırköy Blessed Virgin church was a significant center for religious and cultural activities, as well as a place of refuge for monks and scholars. However, after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the church was converted into a mosque, and many of its original decorations and architectural features were lost. In the 19th century, it was converted back into a church and has been used for religious purposes ever since.
