Notes

Hakob Hakobyan was a renowned Armenian painter and sculptor, People's Artist of the Armenian SSR (1977), corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1988), and full member of the Russian Federation Academy of Arts (1996).

He was born in Alexandria (Egypt), studied at the Melkonian Educational Institute in Cyprus (1934-1941), and at the art academies in Cairo (1944-1947) and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1952-1954).

In Hakobyan's early works, still lifes and thematic paintings predominated, emphasizing feelings of sadness and solitude, such as "Woman in the Kitchen" (1959), "Erebuni" (1961), "Hayk" (1961), "The Tailor" (1962), and "Man and Plant" (1963).

Since 1962, Hakobyan has lived in Armenia, where his art has been enriched with new vibrant tones. He depicted Armenia as he perceived it, without embellishments—clear and restrained, harmonious and balanced. The artist's boundless love for the Armenian landscape gave birth to paintings such as "Spring" (1969), "Peace" (1971), "By the Canal" (1972), "Sevan Shore" (1991), and others.

In addition to painting, Hakobyan created unique sculptures by connecting various parts of metal tools. One of his sculptures, "Family" (1989), is installed on the slopes of Mount Aragats.

Hakobyan's solo exhibitions have been held in many places—Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, the Baltic countries, France, Finland, Lebanon, and the USA.

Hakobyan received numerous state awards and prizes. A significant portion of his artistic legacy is preserved in the National Gallery of Armenia.
