This silver commemorative coin with nominal value Dram 1957, issued by the Central Bank of Armenia, is dedicated to the 50-th anniversary of establishment of the Yerevan Matenadaran named after Mesrop Mashtots.
The Yerevan Matenadaran is the largest institute organizing the safekeeping and public usage of the ancient manuscripts and printed books. The start of formation of the Matenadaran collection goes back to the 5-th century AD, the time when Mesrop Mashtots created Armenian letters. Nowadays Matenadaran collection comprises more than 17 thousand manuscripts and 100 thousand archive documents. It is considered as a valued scientific and historical base for studying the History and Culture of Armenia
The reverse of the coin depicts a fragment from the ornament engraved on the entrance of Matenadaran.
