September 21, 1991 is marked in the history of Armenia as the beginning of the period of the Third Republic. The symbols of the statehood – the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem have been ratified. On 22 November 1993 the national currency of the Republic of Armenia – dram, was put into circulation. The state awards such as titles, orders and medals have been instituted.
Formation of the independent democratic state has conduced to preservation and strengthening of the Armenian Apostolic Church, national identity and traditions. One of the most important achievements of the period of independence was establishment of the national army as the Armenian statehood’s defender.
Today the Republic of Armenia is a member of the United Nations Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Eurasian Economic Union and more than 40 other international organizations.
