This 1000 dram denominated silver coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to the centenary of Viktor Ambartsumian’s birth.
V. Ambartsumian is a world-renowned astrophysicist, the founder of the soviet school of theoretical astrophysics. He is one of the originators of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. In 1947-1994 he has served as the President and in 1994-1996 – the Honorable President of the Academy. He is the Constituent Director of the Burakan Observatory. He has greatly contributed to the development of physical and mathematical sciences in Armenia, improvement of the level of research in the sphere of natural and technical sciences, creation of new disciplines and preparation of skilled staff.
V. Ambartsumian has been conferred many national and international titles, including the title on National Hero of Armenia.
