This 1000 dram denominated silver coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to the 75-th anniversary of foundation of the A. Spendiaryan Theater of Opera and Ballet.
The Theater started by staging A. Spendiaryan’s opera “Almast” (January 20, 1933) launching its activity in the today’s building of Russian Theater after K. Stanislavski. Since 1940 it has been occupying the building originally projected by A. Tamanyan. After staging P. Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” the Theater was renamed as the Theater of Opera and Ballet, and since 1939 – it has been carrying the name of A. Spendiaryan.
The Theater has staged many outstanding works and the creative achievements include Opera “Anoush” by A. Tigranyan, Opera “Arshak B” by T. Chukhajyan, Ballet “Gayane” by A. Khachatryan and many other well-known works. The Theater has also staged west European and Russian classical and modern operas and ballets.
