This silver commemorative coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to the 725-th anniversary of the Gladzor University.
The Gladzor University was a famous Armenian medieval Academy of education and science located in Akhberts monastery of Vayots Dzor. The University had its own Charter. It used to award academic degrees and had a practice of defending master’s theses. Subjects such as Theology, Philosophy, Mythology, Bibliography, Grammar, Oratory, Logics, Geometry and many others were taught at the University. The duration of study was 7-8 years. Graduates were awarded an Archimandrite’s Order or an Archimandrite’s Crosier, which empowered them to serve as preceptors.
In 1984, in honor of the 700-th anniversary of the Gladzor University, the Gladzor University Museum was opened in the church of Vernashen community in Vayots Dzor.
The obverse of the coin depicts Akhberts monastery.
The reverse is devided into two parts - the left part showing a medieval stand used for handwriting and the right one - the names of the masters of the Gladzor University from 1282 to 1386.
The coin is designed by Eduard Kurghinyan,a member of Armenian Association of Artists and Designers. It is produced in the Mint of Finland LTD.
