Notes
US Ambassador to Ottoman Empire in 1913-1916. Margenthau had several meetings with Young Turk leaders Talaat and Enver during the Genocide, trying in vain to prevent Armenian deportations and massacres. In order to assist the victims of the Genocide at the initiative of Morgenthau the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief (later - the American Committee for Relief in the Near East) was established in 1915; Morgenthau himself became deputy chairman of the organization. His memoires "Ambassador Morgenthau's Story" (1918) as well as articles printed in the press contain important and reliable testimonies about the Armenian Genocide.
